Description

This photo shows a small piece of coral which is very worn down. The “skeletal” remains of the individual polyps appear to be interconnecting fireworks.

Related to jellyfish, coral is a colonial animal with each living polyp possessing tiny tentacles which it uses to capture tiny bits of food from the water. Each polyp secretes calcium carbonate to form its skeleton, and together the many individuals in the colony create the bulk of most ocean reefs.
